1. MARIO BALOTELLI (Inter Milan to Manchester City, undisclosed)
The Italian youngster is thought to have cost in the region of £24m. It could turn out to be a bargain considering the former Inter Milan player is considered one of the brightest prospects in European football. But he's also known for being a trouble maker, which means he could turn into another Robinho. Of all City's summer signings, Balotelli is the one that catches the eye, and the fact he scored on his debut bodes well.

2. ASAMOAH GYAN (Rennes to Sunderland 13m pound)
Sunderland broke the club transfer record by importing world cup hot prospect Asamoah Gyan. Gyan scores three goals for Ghana during World Cup 2010. The only concern is El Hadji Diouf was also a star during World Cup 2002 and been spotted by Liverpool soon after. But his performance is never up to expectation..

3. JAVIER HERNANDEZ (Guadalajara to Manchester United, undisclosed)
The Mexican striker is still young and has much to prove, but like Balotelli, he scored on his debut (in the Community Shield against Chelsea) and has looked promising thus far. United bought Hernandez before the World Cup for around £10m. It seemed a bit steep at the time but his performances in South Africa caught the eye and United could have expected to pay much more if they had waited until after the tournament. The 22-year-old will also provide some much needed cover for Wayne Rooney.

4. STEPHEN IRELAND (Manchester City to Aston Villa, swap deal)
Not only did Villa get £18m for James Milner, they also got the hugely talented Stephen Ireland. A couple of seasons ago the Irishman was voted City's player of the year but injury and the spending frenzy at Eastlands saw him marginalised. He's got undoubted class and in a new environment could thrive. An excellent bit of business by Villa.

5. ALEXANDER HLEB (Barcelona to Birmingham City, loan)
When Carson Yeung arrived in the blue half of Birmingham, he promised Alex McLeish a treasure chest of transfer funds. That hasn't quite materialised, but Birmingham have pulled off one of the more eye-catching deals on the last day of the transfer window. Former Arsenal midfielder Hleb has joined on loan for the season. A couple of years ago, Barcelona thought he was good enough for the Nou Camp, so his talent can't be doubted. If he can recapture his form Birmingham can look forward to another solid season.

6. JOE COLE (Chelsea to Liverpool, free)
Of the free transfers, none were as good a bargain as that of Joe Cole. Liverpool won the battle for his signature and while his Reds career might not have started in the best fashion (he was sent off on his debut) it seems only a matter of time before he rediscovers his inventive touch. And Cole is still only 28, which means he might even have his best years ahead of him.

MOUSSA DEMBELE (AZ Alkmaar to Fulham, £5m)
Fulham quietly went about the capture of Moussa Dembele, the Belgian international winger. He scored on his full debut (admittedly against Port Vale) and set up the equaliser against Blackpool with a divine pass. So far he's looked a class act and at just 23 he should keep on improving.

8. SEBASTIEN SQUILLACI (Sevilla to Arsenal, undisclosed)
Arsenal lost William Gallas, Mikael Silvestre and Sol Campbell at the start of the summer so reinforcements were essential. Arsene Wenger bucked the trend of buying youth players and went for the experience of 30-year-old France defender Squillaci. He cost in the region of £3.3m which seems a good price for a reliable international defender

9. WILLIAM GALLAS (Arsenal to Tottenham, free)
As just mentioned, Gallas left Arsenal this summer when his contract came to an end. He has a reputation for causing trouble but over the past decade (at Chelsea and Arsenal) he's proved himself to be one of the most reliable central defenders in the league. Signing him on a free transfer, in Harry Redknapp's words, was a 'no-brainer'.

10. BEN FOSTER (Manchester United to Birmingham, undisclosed)
Sir Alex Ferguson would sing Ben Foster's virtues at any given opportunity when the goalkeeper was on the books at Manchester United. Maybe that pressure contributed to the gaffes that meant when he was given an opportunity to impress at Old Trafford he didn't take them. United finally let him leave the bench this summer and he headed to Birmingham. He has a tough act to follow in place of last season's loan star Joe Hart but his performances so far have been impressive. An extended run in a first team could be just what he needed.
