MELBOURNE: Two Malaysians were charged with importing into Australia heroin with an estimated street value of almost A$50mil (RM159.7mil).

Lee Teik Chai, 34, and Hong Boon Piau, 30, appeared in Sydney's Central Local Court charged with importing 42kg of heroin, the Australian Associated Press said.

The duo, who could face life imprisonment if found guilty, were formally refused bail and would reappear on July 6.

The drug was stashed in 145 packets and hidden inside pieces of household furniture sent from Malaysia this month and arrived at the Sydney docks.

According to the police, the two Malaysians were allegedly considered “key players” in importing the heroin.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) said the massive drug bust on Sydney's docks, one of the biggest hauls of heroin in a decade, was proof that international crime rings were targeting Australia while the dollar was high.

Commander Brian McDonald, AFP's Sydney office manager, made the comments after officers seized the heroin from a shipping container at Port Botany.

“This is the largest seizure we've had for some time,” said Customs and Border Protection National Manager Air Cargo and Detained Goods, Catherine Asbridge.

“Most of the seizures over the last decade have been of smaller quantities.

“The last large seizure was actually in 2002, and that was 367kg.”

The two men were arrested by a joint law enforcement taskforce that comprised the AFP, New South Wales (NSW) Police Force, Australian Customs and Border Protection Service, the Australian Crime Commission and the NSW Crime Commission.

They executed a number of search warrants in Sydney and arrested the two Malaysians.

A Customs examination of a container that arrived in Sydney early this month via sea cargo from Malaysia detected 145 packets of heroin concealed in eight pieces of furniture, the AFP said in a statement.

The ongoing investigation, in conjunction with the Royal Malaysian Police, began late April.

NSW Police Force Detective Chief Supt Mal Lanyon said the organisation was committed to working with partner agencies to target border-controlled drugs. - Bernama
